Resident Run Coffee Shop

The resident-run coffee shop at The Breeze Point Lonsdale is the social hub of the community. Exclusive to residents and their friends and family, it’s the perfect place to catch up with neighbours or read the newspaper over a warm cup of coffee.
Maureen Thorpe, alongside her team of fellow volunteers, manages the daily running of this popular space.
Having worked in retail most of her life, Maureen never thought she would try her hand at coffee making. But when she saw the group working away when she first moved to The Breeze it sparked her interest.
“The coffee shop hadn’t been operating for long, so I joined soon after it had opened”, recalls Maureen. “I had no experience. It was just something I thought, ‘I wonder if I can do that’, and I can!”
A few of the volunteers have done a barista training course and have passed on their knowledge to the rest of the team. “We all continue to learn and help each other”, says Maureen. “We have all improved so much”.
The coffee shop has become a great place for new residents to come along and meet their neighbours. “Each new resident is given a free coffee card to encourage them to come in for a coffee. We make them feel welcome and introduce them to their neighbours”.
The team also regularly take in new resident volunteers who want to give coffee making a try. “We have a huge team of residents who volunteer once or twice a fortnight. All the volunteers are so important, and we couldn’t run the coffee shop without them”, says Maureen. “At the rate we’re going, we will need even more volunteers soon as we have been so busy!”
The coffee shop at The Breeze is an inclusive and welcoming place where residents can socialise, relax, and even learn a new skill!
